How to Write a Speech That Lands

From the blank page to the closing line. The proven structure, the openings that earn attention, and the edits that turn a draft into something people remember.

Start at the end

Most people start a speech with the opening line. That’s backwards. Decide the one sentence you want the audience to walk out repeating, and build everything else to set that line up.

“A speech without a point is a speech without a plan.”

Common questions
How long should a speech be?
As long as it needs and not a second more. Most talks are about a third too long — cut anything that doesn't earn its place.
Should I write the speech out word for word? +
Write it out to think clearly, then deliver it from notes. Memorising verbatim makes you sound robotic and panics you when you lose your place.
